About the role
Join a passionate team working to protect and enhance Southland’s water resources.
As Team Leader – Water Resources, you’ll lead a group of hydrologists and scientists who monitor, research, and manage the region’s rivers, lakes, and groundwater.

You’ll oversee key projects — from flood forecasting to long-term water planning — ensuring science and sustainability go hand in hand. It’s a role where technical expertise, leadership, and community impact come together.

What you’ll do

• Lead and mentor a skilled team of water scientists and technicians.
• Oversee hydrology, monitoring, and flood warning programmes.
• Turn data into insight that supports council decisions.
• Partner with iwi, research bodies, and the community.
• Drive innovation and continuous improvement in water management.

What you’ll bring

• Postgraduate qualification (MSc or PhD) in hydrology, water resources, or environmental science.
• Around 10 years’ relevant experience plus proven leadership ability.
• Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
• Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and willingness to work in partnership with Ngai Tahu ki Murihiku.
