Remote senior policy planner

Purpose of the position:

The role of the Senior Policy Planner encompasses overseeing policy elements within the framework of the Resource Management Act 1991. With a primary focus on shaping the District Plan, this position requires adept leadership and guidance in adapting to regulatory shifts while ensuring the continued functionality and integrity of the plan. As a senior leadership role, it entails providing direction and mentorship to the team, exemplifying leadership through actions. The Senior Policy Planner collaborates closely with the Team Leader – District Planning, offering assistance and support, and directly reports to that position.

What the role entails:
  • Develop and implement policies, plans, and strategies under the Resource Management Act, higher-order planning instruments, and the Local Government Act, with a primary focus on the District Plan.
  • Conducts public consultations on behalf of the Council regarding policy matters.
  • Maintains a high standard of customer service in policy development, engaging with various stakeholders and coordinating with internal and external entities.
  • Mentors staff on policy development issues for their professional growth.
  • Contributes input to strategies, plans, and bylaws within the Planning & Policy Group's scope.
  • Manages contracts and consultants as necessary for duty fulfilment.
We’re looking for someone who brings:
  • At least 5 years’ experience in the policy planning area
  • Relevant tertiary qualification(s) in resource management or equivalent
  • Experience with Environmental Court procedures
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Resource Management Act and the Local Government Act, with a focus on plan changes
  • Membership of New Zealand Planning Institute and / or other related professional organisations
  • Proven interpersonal skills and ability to obtain collaboration and cooperation
  • Well organised and able to prioritise and work to deadlines
