Senior Advisor – Local Government
Location: Invercargill, Southland
Type: Permanent, Full-time

About the Role

We’re seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Advisor – Local Government to help deliver high-quality planning, reporting, and compliance for a forward-thinking regional authority.
You’ll play a key part in preparing the Long-Term Plan, Annual Plan, and Annual Report, ensuring the organisation meets its obligations under the Local Government Act 2002 while driving improvement and transparency.

What You’ll Do
  • Provide expert advice and hands-on support for key statutory documents.
  • Interpret and apply legislation to ensure compliance and best practice.
  • Coordinate Section 17A service delivery reviews to improve community outcomes.
  • Build strong working relationships with internal teams, iwi partners, and other councils.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve systems and processes.

About You
  • Tertiary qualification in policy, public administration, business, or similar.
  • 7+ years’ experience in local government, planning, or policy.
  • Strong understanding of the Local Government Act 2002.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and effective engagement with mana whenua.
